In the 2017 parliamentary elections, about 47 percent of the Albanian electorate went to the polls.
Those who boycotted were mainly the youth and this phenomenon is ascertained by the latest study of the EBRD, where it is stated that the Albanian youth is indifferent to ballot boxes, while the flag of participation in elections is held by the over 55 years old.
The indifference of young people to go to the polls has many reasons, but the most important one is apparently the disappointment from politics.
In its report, EBRD suggests several options to get young people active in elections, such as compulsory voting, where practice in Australia, Belgium and Luxembourg has shown that fear of penalities has significantly increased turnout. While the second option according to the EBRD is “pay young people” to vote, by providing financial bonuses for them.
In the parliamentary elections of April 25, the parties will find it difficult to convince not only the gray electorate, but apparently also the young people, as their lack of interest in the elections is due to the corrupt political class itself.
