Durres new aqueduct

Durres, the second biggest city in Albania and which hosts thousands of
tourists during the summer season, has still serious problems with the
water supply.

To end this situation, the Durres municipality signed an agreement with the World Bank for building the new aqueduct.

Prime Minister Edi Rama considered this agreement very important and stated that a radical reform is needed for the aqueduct.

“Durres has been waiting for 25 years running water in their taps, and the project that will end this long wait will start today. I am happy that the implant of 2011 had been completed, but it was blocked and was not working. Today it is working for processing the sewage waters. This important tourist area will not have anymore pollution”, Rama declared

The World Bank director, Ellen Goldsten, declared that more cooperation is needed with the local administration to be closer to the citizens.

“I think that there is no better place than Albania to realize this model of local decentralization. We signed this agreement in this city and I know that the Prime Minister is still a Mayor in his heart. It was not difficult to convince him today, because he knows that this is the place where things need to get done. I am happy that the World Bank will be your partner in supporting the municipalities and communes”, Goldsten declared.

This investment foresees the construction of water transportation networks, in order to face its absence during the tourist season peak, and will also build secondary networks that connects villages with the water system. Those who will profit the most from this project will be the 400.000 Durres citizens and those who frequent this city during the summer season.
