The tourist city of Verona in Italy might be the leading model for
Durres. Both cities, besides the sea, have another thing as common: the
amphitheater built during the Roman Empire.
The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, is attending a two-day visit in Italy, in a meeting with the Mayor of Verona, Flavio Tossi, and asked for a closer cooperation between the two countries.
The Mayor of Durres, Vangjush Dako, expressed his commitment for the twinning of both cities and for using the good experiences of Verona for protecting the Durres Amphitheater, which might be the biggest outside the Roman Empire borders, and for encouraging cultural and artistic activities in it.
Rama was also invited in the Albanian and the Swiss Pavilions in Venice, where he spoke with architects, artists and other participants about his experience in transforming Tirana through work and aesthetic.
“I started it by saying that the high expectancies are the most horrible part of the political life. After winning the elections of the past year, I would certainly like to be able to solve the country’s problems through colors, but this is not an option anymore. People need jobs and something that cannot be resolved by colors. I believe that the significance that colors had for the city was a big lession that the beauty can help rebuilding the economy, and that the beautiful can rebuilt the the coexistence feeling, the feeling of community and solidarity. Beauty could also bring more law and order than police in some times. It is not just a matter of colors. More than colors, this is about making a better place where we live”, Rama declared.
Convinced in the transforming power that the common spaces have for the society, the government leader underlined this as a big lesson that he took:
“I have seen suburban areas with high crime rates to get transformed by simply changing their public spaces. I have seen other areas where crime has increased, even when the presence of police has increased, even when the number of arrests has increased, even when the usage of force has increased. This is a big lesson that I too: not always something is to be changed, but it can be used and turn into a strong point”, Rama declared.
