Durrës-Fier-Vlorë without running water

Three of the biggest Albanian cities, two of them with tourist
industries, Vlore, Durres and Fier, are lacking of running water.

The sudden interruption happened for the same reason in the three cities: the Aqueducts failing to pay energy bills.

“CEZ”, The Albanian Energy Distribution Company undertook these extreme measures for the three cities, by not providing energy for their water pumps.

The Fier Aqueduct has accumulated a debt of 15 million ALL per month since October 2010.

Aqueduct directors say that these enterprises do not have profits and it is impossible for them to pay such expensive energy bills. For this reason, they have demanded subventions from the Albanian state, which has not been granted to them. The consequences have been expensive energy bills that caused the Albanian Energy Distribution Company “CEZ” to undertake such measures.

The lacking of running water at homes has obliged Vlore citizens to stay in queue at natural water sources around the city.

Meanwhile, the director of Vlore Aqueduct, Varvara Gjika expressed her on the lacking of water in hospitals and bread producing bakeries.

Same problem was identified in Durres too. The directors of the aqueduct confirmed the lacking of energy at their water pumps in the Fushe Kuqe and Fushe Kruje aqueducts which provide the Durres city with water.

With plastic bottles in their hands, citizens of different age-groups have been seeking water in the Aqueduct’s doors, since the water quality there is safer.

No announcement has been given of when electricity will be back at the aqueducts of these cities, in the verge of the tourist season.
