The Albanian Deputy Prime Minister, Niko Peleshi, declared that the
situation in the energy sector is dramatic, with robberies from the
system mounting up to 250 million EUR each year.
Peleshi declared that the government has started a wide national action for finding and hitting all subjects that rob electric energy, but asked the courts to do their job.
“This activity that we are starting now with the task force for the energy losses has some dimensions. First, there is an important dimension and having a wealthy financial situation of the budget. Secondly, there is a dimension for establishing justice in our country and turn the state for those who pay regularly and who have constantly been challenged against informality”, Peleshi declared.
Together with the Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, the second person in charge of the Albanian government declared in the first meeting with the operational unit established for identifying the energy losses in the Durres Region.
“74The previous government created a debt that was 74% of the Gross Domestic Product, and we don’t have the luxury to take other loans and cross this, for the moment. Our only way today is a good administration. You have heard about this and we are waiting for a support from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank that mounts up to 350 illion USD, while we lose 150 million USD from the electric energy losses”, Peleshi declared.
The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, declared that the situation is very critical and asked for an identification of the map for those who will not receive bills.
“The energy is an urgent problem, regardless of the technical insufficiencies that we might have with the supply, something that is also caused by the lack of money to invest in the distribution network. We must understand that this is not bearable anymore. All we need to do is watch the figures for Durres. We are talking about 100 million USD that have been stolen during the past year”, Gjiknuri declared.
The losses and abuses with the energy not only have damaged the state budget for years, but they have plunged the sector in a chain of debs that reaches 1 billion USD.
