DP to international observers: “Government cutting payments of Vetting staff to control them”

While the EU Ambassador to Tirana expressed today their support to the
new judiciary institutions that will carry out the vetting of 800 judges
and prosecutors, the Democratic Party declared that by reducing funds
and the human resources of these institutions, the government aims to
control the vetting process and as result, the entire new judiciary
system.

The Head of the Democratic Party Parliamentary Group, Edmond Spaho, sent a letter to the Chief of the International Monitoring Organization, saying that this sabotage puts seriously at risk all of the new judiciary institutions, including the Special Prosecution Against Corruption, the Bureau of Investigation, which were established to fight corruption at higher levels.

“The lack of support and insufficient human resources could make the Vetting institutions take decisions on information that has been prepared by the government, and they would be unable to verify it”, Spaho says.

The Democratic Party asked the IMO to have an active role during the implementation of the Vetting Law, to keep in control what they call: “biased government actions to dictate the Vetting process”.

Spaho said that the Prime Minister used the silence of international partners to reduce the Vetting Law budget. For this reason, he warned them that any lack of attention or of reaction would serverely damage the results of the process and the trust of Albanians to the new judiciary system.
