The opposition reacted to the letter sent by the Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, to the Albanian President, Bujar Nishani.
In that letter, the Minister asked the President, as Chairman of the High Council of Justice, to take measures against some judges who have released a defendant.
The opposition declared that the Minister is being revengeful, since one of these judges was the one who left in power a court a fine against Tahiri over slander.
“Tahiri asks the President to take measures agaisnt judge Edmond Gogo, who was part of the Court of Appeal panel in 2012, which decided to leave in act the verdict of the Court of Tirana, which fined Tahiri with 1 million ALL for slander. The man who was fined for slander, today acts as Interior Minister of Albania. He is abusing with his power to retaliate against an independent institution which decides based on facts and based on the law. The Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior are telling citizens that they should consult the government before taking decisions. They are showing to be revengeful, taking notes for each of them, This act is a very bad sign for democracy in our country. This undermines the legal safety, the independence of the judiciary and it also destroys independent institutions. This is open blackmail and a warning for every citizen and for the justice in our country”, declared the Democratic Party Parliament Member, Oerd Bylykbashi.
