After losing the elections that brought the resignation of Berisha, the
Democratic Party members gathered today to vote the new Democratic Party
leader.

This is the first time that the Democratic Party leadership is voted through the principle “one membe, one vote”. The rivals are Lulzim Basha and Sokol Olldashi. During the campaign that lasted three weeks, the incumbent leader, Sali Berisha, did not interfere to favor any of the candidates. Berisha believes that only a real race will make the Democratic Party strong again.

“This us a great occasion to greet all members of the Democratic Party for the civilized way in which they proceeded with the open race and for the participation in the voting. I guarantee that I will be one of them to make a new and powerful beginning for the Democratic Party, which will turn its first race into a deep victory”, Berisha declared.

Lulzim Basha voted at around noon, expressing his gratitude to the Democratic Party membership. Basha’s declaration focused on the internal process of the party, and the necessity to have a transparent vote. According to Basha, this is the most important challenge for the Democratic Party members and the entire country, so that no one is denied from the right to see what happened and how the citizens’ will was deformed.

“As a Democratic Party member, I appeal our members and supporters to stay strong on this case. This is not only an issue of the Democratic Party, but of our identity as Albanians and free citizens. It is a matter of our European identity. We cannot ignore any of these identities to favor criminal actions that now stand in the roots of the Socialist Party and their leader, Edi Rama, a crime that was noted in a large number of polling stations during the June 23rd elections and Rama has not appeared in a press release to condemn it”, Basha declared.

The other candidate, Sokol Olldashi, declared that he would vote around 19:00, just before the official deadline is over. He has not released any press statement for the media.

The Democratic Party vice leader, Jozefina Topalli, voted and valued the process, saying that it is an emancipation process in the Albanian politics. According to Topalli, most of the merits go the incumbent leader, Sali Berisha, and the Democratic Party’s membership.

“The truth is that Sali Berisha has established a higher standard in the Albanian politics, and the large participation shows the civilization and the deep democratic spirit of this party, which will lecture the political opponent that used money, force and crime to come to power”, Topalli declared.

98.000 Democratic Party members will vote in 54 polling stations. The ballot count starts at the Palace of Congresses with 10 ballot counting groups.

The name of the new Democratic Party leader might be announced tomorrow.
