Five day before the deadline for the registration of the candidates who
will run for the June 21st local elections, the US Embassy says that
some of these candidates have a criminal past.
The US Ambassador chose a very direct language to say that the lists have people with a suspicious past, for which they are discussing with the political leaders.
The Ambassador says the Embassy has checked every candidate thoroughly, and says they are happy for the increased number of female candidates. He appeals the Albanian people to participate in the elections in order to change politisc.
The US government has offered 625.000 USD to support the civil society for free and honest elections. Despite the high international monitoring, the US diplomat declared that the Albanian people are the ones to decide if the elections will be fair or not.
