Domestic violence and police protection

Calls made on the free phone line offered by the police (129 and 126),
have saved the life of two wives in Tirana who had been threatened by
their former husbands.

The neighbors notified the police right after hearing noises coming from their houses.

“Recently there has been a concerning increase of the domestic crime. There’s a large number and our intervention is difficult, since most of the cases are reported by the neighbors and not the persons in need. However, we have intervened, as we did yesterday in Ali Demi, where we arrested two suspects”, declared Petrit Bregu, head of the operative room.

According to the police, many former spouses, mainly under divorce procedures, are violating the protection orders given by the court. This phenomenon is present in couples who have reported domestic violence.

“We have never witnesses cases when men request protection from their women, but only women who have been violated by their husbands or the families of their husbands. Usually the protection ignores the children and focuses only on the wives”, declared psychologist Valbona Treska.

“It Is difficult for the victims to make the phone call, but this doesn’t’ mean that it hasn’t happened”, declared Petrit Bregu, head of the police operative room.

The doubts on the functionality of the protection system has made many of the victims to withdraw their charges. It is still unknown if they do it after being threatened, or because they have really reconciliated.

The most recent case is the murder of Dallendyshe Jazexhiy by her husband, who also committed suicide. Dallendyshe had requested protection and then withdrew it one month before she was found dead.
