“Thinking that Kosovo might return to Serbia is just a lost time”, said Milo Djukanovic, the leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party in Montenegro.
Djukanovic said that Serbia lost Kosovo due to the wrong policies of the past, referring to the conflict of 1999, which forced NATO to intervene.
The man who has been in power for almost 30 decades, is running once again for President this April 15th.
“Montenegro did not recognize Kosovo’s independence due to Western pressure, but our conviction is that we need to see the truth for what it is”, he said.
For Djukanovic, recognizing Kosovo would also contribute to the region’s stability.
“Today’s Serbia doesn’t decide for Kosovo. They simply took the defeated bill”.
Polls are positive for Djukanovic and he might win again, although analysts say that the country needs a democratic refreshment.
The Montenegrin opposition, however, remains fragmentized and very weak. The votes of minorities, on the other hand, are expected to have a key role in these elections.
Djukanovic is known for creating harmonic relations with all ethnic communities in the country and he has earned political support from this.
