Disappearing professions; The Albanian tinsmith who now works only to preserve the tradition

With the piece of sheet tin in his hand and the tools he inherited from his great-grandfather, Kostika Gjezi starts to create the flower-shaped details, which are placed in the corners of the gutters or the roofs he constructs, by which the craftsman is identified.

The symbol was created years ago by his ancestors at a time when the craft of sheet metal work was indispensable and his work was needed in every home.

Kostika belongs to the 4th generation of the Gjezi family, known for their mastery in this craft, and his works are carried out in the same premises where his great-grandfather opened the first workshop.

Over the years, the work of tinsmiths began to be required less and less and the hand production of tin or metal house appliances were reduced, so this work became more of a community service, as a passion to preserve the tradition of his ancestors, rather than a source of income.

Kostika says that the new generations have no interest in the crafts of the past, so artisans often see with concern their lack of interest in acquiring the knowledge, as this means that many old individual skills will disappear completely in a few years.
