Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta held his first official meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Tirana, Ettore Sequi.
Meta reconfirmed his stance that the absolute priority for Albania remains the acceleration of the European integration process, a process in which he was committed for a comprehensive cooperation in the Albanian Parliament. The political dialogue between the Parliamentary parties was emphasized as a main request even by Ambassador Sequi.
“We have already said that we hope and trust that we will see a parliament where dialogue and cooperation will prevail over confrontation. This cooperation for reaching the national objective for European integration will be the connection point between the government forces and the opposition, which after 23 years of joint efforts for European integration, the majority and the opposition will cooperate successfully with each other, and we hope to see results very soon”, Sequi declared.
“Most importantly, we will work to create a cooperation climate in the Albanian Parliament, a constructive climate that should radiate beyond this Parliament for cooperation between all Parliamentary political forces. Because all know that the lack of cooperation has been the main obstacle for reaching our major objectives”, Meta declared.
By making clear what Brussels expects from the majority and the Parliamentary opposition, Ambassador Sequi was direct when he defined Meta’s role in a quicker approach of Albania to the European Union.
“The role of the Parliament leader in this aspect is key, and I believe that Mr.Meta will offer his vision and leadership to have these results even more quickly. Brussels wants to see a parliament with a strong, European and constructive majority, and also to see a parliament with a strong, European and constructive opposition”, Sequi declared.
“I believe that we have all our chances to go faster in the path of a stable cooperation, for as long that all political forces, both the opposition and the majority, have only one objective, which belongs to all Albanians: accession to the European Union as soon as possible”, Meta declared.
