Dhërmi Church sparks new diplomatic raw between Albania and Greece

Himara Municipality intervention in “St. Athanasius Church” in Dhërmi village, southern Albania, has produced another diplomatic tension between Albania and Greece.

Greek Foreign Ministry expressed its indignation for what happened and called the municipality action a forceful displacement of believers and religious symbols, something it condemns. In the official statement, Athens also calls on Albania to stop these actions which do not show the true face of a country that aspires to join the European family, and expects answers from the Albanian government.

The Albanian Foreign Ministry considered this a rushed reaction of the Greek state, and assured that Albania has made every effort to respect the laws of the country related to the religious communities and the prevention of illegal constructions. Albania also considers this as an interference of Greece in the internal matters of another sovereign country, and also an effort from Athens to portrait itself as a defender of orthodox believers in Albania, maintaining an archaic ideology, not compatible with the European values, that every orthodox is a Greek.
