Destruction of Lengarica canyons

Environmentalists asked the government to stop working for the
construction of the Lengarica hydropower plant at the Petran Commune,
Permet, which is a protected area.

“Works should not continue in this river, because the water flow is 8200 liters per second, and 8000 liters per second are taken away, 200 are left to it. Here we have one of the first habitations of this world, the Pellumbas Cave and eight thermal resources. There is a beautiful canyon that will get dried”, says environmentalist Sazan Guri”.

Other environmentalists say that the concessionary agreements for building the hydropower plants are threatening even other areas, such as Valbona, the Shebenik mountains in Librazhd, Kukes, Diber, etc. They want law amends for managing the water resources and adapting international standards, which instruct that the water flow used for energy should not be higher than 33% of the total river flow, and in this case it is more than 97%.

Environmentalists have sent a letter to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Energy and Environment, saying that they want to save rivers from 300 concessionary agreements that were previously signed.
