The three public companies of the energy sector, KESH, OST and the
Distribution Operator, have officially started a process for reviewing
the energy prices.
Sources from the Energy Regulation Entity confirmed for Top Channel that at least one of the companies have made a request for increasing the energy price, while the two other companies are still formulating their requests.
Based on the law, the three public companies that make the energy system must hand over to the Energy Entity all the new fees that will be applied for the next year.
Their requests in the past have been for increasing prices, and this might happen even this year. The new energy prices that the entity should approve for the next year have turned into a hot public debate, but not only.
They seem to be among the hottest negotiation topics between the IMF and the Albanian government.
The IMF wants to icnrease prices for consumers and businesses, to bring the energy sector out of the deep prices, after it has accumulated a debt of 600 million EUR.
But the government seems reserved on this point. Even within the government there have been different stances regarding the energy prices.
The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, declared that the reviewing of the fees is necessary, but Prime Minister Rama declared in a public press release that prices will not grow.
Besides debates, the new energy prices will be a hot topic for the government, which should convince the IMF that they can regulate the sector even without raising the energy prices, but by reducing losses, which mount to hundreds of millions of euros each year.
The initial energy price in Albania is 9.53 ALL, but fees are not equal within consumers of different categories.
