The protest of December 8th showed once again the deep political
divisions in Albania. In an interview for Top Channel, the Head of the
delegation EP-Albania, underlined the need to realize the justice
reform, which, according to her, will take more time. She said that the
law for decriminalization should also be voted.
Monica Macovei said that one of the biggest issues in Albania is the lack of political dialogue and consensus.
Monica Macovei, Head of the delegation EP-Albania: The justice reform needs time. It is the longest one. This was shown in all countries of the region, even the post-communist ones. Now they should approve the law that bans people with a criminal past form public posts. This law should pass. If you have 10 people that fall under the provisions of this law and don’t hold public posts, this is a success. If you have more, the better. But the law should not be withheld, and people with criminal records should not be allowed to be on public posts after the justice reform. It is true that more trust is needed on court verdicts, because they have consequences. People might go to prison or not take public posts in this case. This is a vicious circle and you should not wait to do this together with the justice reform, which could take years. You should pass this law and stop people with criminal records taking public posts.
