The Minister of Finances, Shkelqim Cani, declared at the Parliamentary
Commission of Economy that the government was obliged to increase the
deficit due to old debts left by the Democratic Party.
“We are declaring what the opposition has tried to abuse so far. Yes, we will take debts to pay the old ones, because there is no other option”, Cani declared.
But the Democratic Party Parliament Member, Sherefedin Shehu, declared that the deficit of the next year will be a record breaking one and abusive, because, according to him, the unpaid debts are not as high as the government is making them.
“The biggest debt that the government of the Democratic Party has taken was 49 billion ALL. You have doubled the debt without doubling the obligations that you say were left by the Democratic Party, which in reality are half of what you have declared”, Shehu said.
Mr.Shehu warned that the 91.6 billion deficit threatens the economy and the financial stability of the country.
“Besides this deficit, which will suffocate the economy without leaving any space for the Albanian business loans, you will also take money from the citizens and will damage the demand and consumption, and all these hits will be very hard”, Shehu declared.
“Imagining what will happen with the debt, and discussing those figures before they even happen… The truth is that we only discovered the depth of that debt. What should we do? Leave it unadministered?”, declared the Socialist Party Parliament Member, Anastas Angjeli.
“We are taking loans with a 2% interest rate to pay the debt that you received with a 12.8% interest rate”, Cani declared.
The government will pay 35 billion ALL of unpaid debts for the next year, through soft loans from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.
