The Mayor of Durres, Vangjush Dako, reacted after the accusations made
against him by Lulzim Basha and Ben Blushi for helping Lulzim Berisha’s
release, the head of a notorious Durres gang.
Dako said courts are the one taking decisions for convicts, not municipalities, and that these accusations are just political slander before the elections of 2017, and an effort to shift attention from the blocking of the Vetting law.
Dako said that the municipality’s documents regarding Lulzim Berisha’s employment are routine in these institutions, and Basha should have remembered this from when he was a mayor.
Dako said that the municipality had only accepted to allow Berisha work for them, for community services, if the Court would give him an alternate sentence.
Dako added that he knows Lulzim Berisha personally as a sportsman, businessman and citizen of Durres, and considers the request of the opposition leader to discharge him as an effort to shift attention away from their problems with courts and with the implementation of the Vetting law.
Dako specified that the Durres municipality has 36 convicts who are making community services as part of court probation sentences.
