The Foreign Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, says that their country will have to watch their interests first, and keep walking between Russia and the West.

In an interview for Reuters, Dacic said that Belgrade will not sacrifice relations with their ancient ally, Moscow, in exchange of a warmer relation with the EU and USA.

Referring to the comment of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Hoyt Brian Yee, who said that Serbia cannot sit in two chairs at the same time, when these chairs are far away from each other, Dacic said; “When someone asks us to not sit on two chairs, he is trying to take away our chair so that we fall on the ground. For this reason, I think that we should not pay attention to this critic. It is important to protect our national interest”, the Foreign Minister declared.

According to Dacic, Belgrade will continue to have a balanced alliance with the West, Russia and China. The EU is Serbia’s biggest trading partner, while Russia remains the top gas supplier. Besides thatl Russia has very close military ties with Serbia, and has recently donated them six military MiG-29 war planes.

Russia’s harsh stance against Kosovo’s independence in the international arena also plays well for Serbia. The Serbian Foreign minister had declared that if Spain can fight to defend itself (referring to Catalonia) then Serbia can do it as well.
