Czech threat for status

The “Reuters” news agency declared that the Czech Republic might block
Albania’s candidate status due to the actions taken against CEZ, the
energy distribution company that operated in Albaniam, 70% owned by the
Czech government. Reuters quoted confirmations from the Secretary for
European Union matters, Thomas Prouza.

His declaration gives another image of the situation: “We must keep in mind that the candidate status does not support only one given issue. However, there are some basic rules from the block that every country needs to implement”, Prouza declared.

Reuters underlines that they cannot verify the media reports. The Czech news agency declared one day ago that sources at the European Union had confirmed that the Czech Republic is preparing to block the candidate status for Albania because of CEZ.

The vice chairwoman of CEZ, Barbara Pulpanova, has not made any comment about the government’s stance. Albania revoked the license to CEZ during the last year, and the company demanded an international arbitrage court to resolve the disagreement with Tirana.

The European Commission recommended in June that our country deserves the status due to the progress that has been reached so far, but the last word is up to the Council of Ministers of the European Union.

Sources from the CTK confirm that Prague criticized the fact that the talks between Tirana and CEZ didn’t bring anything in Vienna. That’s why they have sent a signal time ago, insinuating that the disagreement might even affect the status on June 28th.

However, the agency says that this issue is about to be negotiated. They say that the Czech government will use their veto as their last instrument for resolving thed stalemate. The Czech Prime Minister declared yesterday that in general his country supports the accession of new countries.

“The Czech Republic will have interest to defend their foreign investments in Albania for stabilizing the business environment and fight against terrorism”, Sobotka declared.

However, he didn’t forget to underline that for the candidate status, Albania needs to fulfill all the necessary criteria. CEZ had a series of problems in the region and is risking to lose its license even in Bulgaria.
