Cuts on diplomatic service

The financial crisis is affecting the diplomatic service too. The
Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, declared that some embassies will be
closed and other will have less staff, since there is a bad debt
situation in our diplomatic sees.

“The budget is a problem on its own, without forgetting that we are facing extraordinary challenges. The next government has left a huge gap in the diplomatic area, and today we have embassies that cannot make the monthly payments, with debts inherited for years”, Bushati declared.

Top Channel: When you speak about rationalization, you mean closing embassies and cutting staff?

Ministri Bushati: When we speak about rationalization, I mean the closing of embassies in several countries where we are not effective, and a cutting of the staff. We will do everything with transparence.

Bushati added that the Foreign Ministry will start a radical reform in diplomacy, with people who represent Albania decently. He did not hesitate to call some embassies as sheltering dorms.

But the Foreign Minister didn’t say if the current appointment method will be preserved, with half of the staff coming from politics and half coming from the system.

The Foreign Commission approved three new propositions for ambassadors, Artur Kuko in Berlin, Adriana Hodbari in Strasbourg and Roland Bimo in Vienna.
