10% of Albanians who immigrated after the 90s have returned between 2009 and 2013.
The International Organization of Emigration showed that the deep crisis in the Greek economy, and the stagnation of Italy, have forced Albanian immigrants to return home.
“134.000 immigrants have returned from 2009 to 2013. The pace of returns has accelerated year after year. The average age of immigrants who have returned is 38.6 years”, says Gjergji Filipi, Director of INSTAT.
The study says that 71% of these emigrants come from Greece, 24 from Italy. 60% of them say their remittances to families have been small during the first years, 200-500 Euros.
The study has also discovered that 60% of them have returned to the same place, while the rest have returned in urban centers, like Tirana, Durres and Vlore. Most of them are working in agriculture and opening small businesses.
“We need to improve the services for those who return. We must support the new businesses, so that they can invest with their knowledge and capital, especially in agriculture”, declared Zineb Touimi Benjelloun, representative of UNDP in Albania.
The study says that 40% of those who returned have planned to stay in Albania, while 1\3rd think to emigrate once again.
