Criminals will not be allowed to vote

Criminals convicted for serious crimes, such as murder, pedophilia,
kidnappers, pimps and those involved with terror or genocide crimes, or
also with drug and gun traffic, power abuse and corruption, will not be
able to vote, as part of the decriminalization procedure.

Bledar Doracaj, General Director of the Civil Registration, said that a special group will be established together with the Prison Directory to exchange information with people affected by the law. “This law also forces courts to send us a copy of the verdicts so that we can establish electoral records”, he said.

The law will affect around 2000 people who are still serving sentences for these crimes.

Electoral experts, however, are against this precedented decision in the history of political pluralism in Albania.
