A group of Albanian epidemiologists and immunologists led by professors Genc Sulcebe and Alban Ylli are conducting a study on the traces left by the Sars-Cov2 virus in the population’s blood.

Alban Ylli, Epidemiologist: We started the study in April and it involved almost 280 people from 4 neighborhoods of Tirana. The conclusion drawn is that the circulation of the virus is in about 6% of the population. If we compare it with the data of western countries, in Albania there is still a circulation of the virus and the population is very receptive, which means that the vast majority have not passed the disease, do not have immunity to it. This shows that we still have to wait a long time for the circulation of this virus to have more and more immune people who will stop its circulation naturally until the vaccine is possible in Albania.

Question: “Did we do the right thing by being totally isolated during March and April?”

Alban Ylli: We did very well to close when the virus was aggressive and when could have caused hundreds of casualties. The virus circulates, but is not doing as much damage as in the spring. Our advice is for restaurants, bars, schools, universities, activities that encourage gatherings to remain closed.
