The special anti-corruption court today gave the final decision on the case of drug traffickers, otherwise known as the “Shijak Group”, as it toughened the punishments for the majority of the defendants.
The court went against the lower court’s decision for 4 of the 6 members of the group, who installed a heroin laboratory in Has in the north of Albania, and were prepared to traffic it through marble materials in Italy.
From seven years of imprisonment previously assigned for Jasin Kala, the appeal toughened the stance by ordering he be sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment.
Denis Llafti’s acquittal was also overturned and his position was aggravated not only by being found guilty but also by being sentenced to 10 years in prison. For two others defendants along witj citizen Astrit Avdyli, the Court returned the case for trial at the first instance.
The suspects were convicted after an investigation based on wiretapping and surveillance, which exposed other names such as businessman Admir Hoxha, whose assets were seized by the authorities.
A parallel investigation was also conducted in relation with the early and general elections, but it was declared void and the investigation ended in the court of Dibra.
