The American dream could end for thousands of Albanian applicants who try their luck each year with the annual American Visa Lottery.
US President Trump declared today that he would ask the Congress to close the program, which he called “madness”.
Trump’s reaction came after it was discovered that the New York attacker, who killed eight people in New York, had entered the USA through the Visa Lottery.
But beyond political rhetoric, what are the chances for Trump to end this program? For this, the VOA Albanian journalist in USA, Kejda Kostreci, who has actually moved to America through this program, was on a live interview on Top Channel’s main news edition.
Kostreci explained that the reactions were mainly focused on the political side, on what the Visa Lottery represents, especially due to the attacks that President Trump has launched on Twitter against the Head of Democrats in Senate, Chuck Schumer, who reacted and said that the terror attack should not be politicized.
But what political power has Trump to stop the lottery? Kostreci said that he cannot cancel it on his own, with an executive order. The matter can only be discussed and resolved by the Congress. For this reason, the President has asked the Congress to start working on the matter. In fact, KOstreci said that a similar initiative was undertaken in 2013 as well, but the draft did not pass at the House of Representatives. Besides this, seeing that Trump’s agenda is very tight, discussion for this matter might not happen soon.
