The external borders of the European Union may remain closed to the citizens of Albania, Kosovo and other countries in the Western Balkans region, even after July 1, despite the earlier recommendation of the European Commission that they open on this date.
Two weeks ago the EC recommended that the internal boundaries of the block be opened no later than June 15.
But EU Commissioner for Immigration Adalbert Jahns, said it was up to member states to decide whether or not to lift restrictions on Western Balkan citizens.
“The recommendation was not only because of the epidemiological situation but also because of the EU’s relations with that region. As for the situation, we are following it very carefully. Discussions in the Council are ongoing and in those discussions the current epidemiological situation is taken into account “, said the commissioner’s spokesman.
