Container Control in port is blocking the increased drug smuggling

United Nations representative in Tirana says that the joint unit of customs and state police has increased control of containers with goods crossing the key commercial artery in the country, the port of Durrës.

“Since the work started there are confiscated 22.7 kg of heroin, more than 5.6 tons of marijuana and counterfeit goods to the value of 50 thousand euros,” said Zineb Touimi-Benjelloun.

But the director of the State Police, Artan Didi, a clear separation of duties and responsibilities is needed, in order to improve these results.

“It is necessary to cooperate to higher levels with the customs authorities and taking joint responsibility for operational direction on unit controls of containers because they have not brought the expected results,” said Didi.

“We’ve worked hard because on one hand we should challenge the impassable boundaries of organized crime and on the other hand to facilitate honest business, but it is not impossible,” said Director of Customs, Elisa Spiropali.

Controls executed during 2014 are tripled, 260 from 86 which was their capacity in 2013.
