Albanians have paid more than 78 million EUR during the past year for only three concessionary companies that make monopoly services protected by government agreements.
Official data show that the Tirana International Airport, the Passport Production and the Customs Scanning have declared 9.8 billion ALL for 2017, with a profit ratio of almost 38%.
The Tirana International Airport tops the list with 6 billion ALL of revenues, 2.3 billion of which were net profit.
Second after airports comes the passport concession. Aleat SHPK earned 2.3 billion ALL from passports and identity cards that were sold to Albanian citizens through their monopoly agreement. Their profit is also 25%, with more than 642 million ALL of profits for the past year.
S2 Albania, the company that makes the customs scanning, is listed third. They had a profit of 207 million ALL from 1.56 billion ALL turnovers.
Concessions keep producing large profits for citizens, but they also receive money from the state budget. These are just three of the companies. What citizens pay for these companies is much higher in total.
