Concerns that US sanctions on Russia may affect gas pipelines to Europe

European experts warn that the new US sanctions against Russia may put in danger important gas projects in Europe.

And this includes pipelines such as the ones that supply gas from Azerbaijan to Georgia, Turkey, Albania, Montenegro and Croatia.

The sanctions may block the entire initiative, since the Russian Lukoil is also part of the project, according to “Total Croatia News”.

Croatia’s economy, an EU member country, has already felt the weight of the measures taken against Russia. Data from recent years show that the export growth would have been higher and faster without those sanctions.

Sources in Brussels say that the European Union will indirectly become victim of Washington’s sanctions, and are now trying to convince the US administration to stop them.

“We hope to see a solution that will not deteriorate the relations between USA and Russia. This is one of the objectives of the Euroepan leadership”, some Croatian diplomats are quoted on this portal.

“Everyone is concerned and we believe there will be no need for taking extreme measures in order to protect European interests”, they add.

Brussels is also discussing the opportunity of starting a trial against the USA if it is proven that the European economy will suffer consequences of US sanctions against Russia.
