Bari Grabova, today 80 years old, received the first installment of
compensation for the eight years of prison he made during the communist
regime.
He was chosen by the Ministry of Social Welfare in the group of 54 former political prisoners who will receive the first installments after 23 years.
Bari declared that all members of the Grabova family had been persecuted by the communist government, and in 23 years of pluralism he had never received any compensation.
“It is important to specify for all cynics that this is not a reward, but a compensation to those who have suffered damages. Many of the public infrastructure that we have today was made for free by people who have worked under violence. I would like the understanding of all tax payers, because I know that people have problems and would say why they are being paid and us not. However, this is something that had to be done”, declared Minister Erion Veliaj.
According to the government meeting, the first installment for all the former persecuted people who have never been compensated will be given by August. During the same year there will be law amends for the criteria and the priority will be given to the former prisoners who are still alive.
From 560 persecuted people that will receive the first installment this year, 180 are more than 85 years old.
