Three from five Council of Europe reporters, after finishing their visit
in Tirana, quoted a declaration of the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali
Berisha, who declared that he will recognize the election result at any
circumstance. This was made public by the member of this delegation,
Petros Tatsopoulos.
“I don’t think that politicians can make games about the election result, especially when it is narrow. You politicians have received that message and they will put many things to danger if they make these games. I know that it has happened in the past, but I don’t want to blame anyone. The Prime Minister declared very clearly in what circumstances the Democratic Party and its coalition will accept the election result. On the other hand, during the meeting that we had with the Socialist Party representatives, we didn’t have such a confirmation. They said that they will see how the process will go and after that they will speak about the result”, Tatsopoulos declared.
Mr.Tatsopoulos was direct when he declared that the current CEC composure is a serious problem that could turn into a danger.
“As we have said before, the Central Election Commission is a serious problem that could turn into a danger, because the CEC is the main actor for the results of these elections”, he underlined.
Although the journalists’ questions focused on the CEC crisis, the head of this delegation, Italian Luca Volante, declared that their mission was advising the political actors and not interfering for finding a solution. Volante gave this conclusion from his visit to Tirana.
“Albania needs the June 23rd elections to fulfill its commitments with the Council of Europe. Albania needs its standards and to confirm its real commitment for democracy, the rule of law and the respecting of human rights. The delegation expresses its regret that the Central Election Commission crisis was not overcome yet. For as long that CEC is considered as incomplete, the realization of democratic elections can be in danger”, Volante declared.
The Council of Europe will bring 25 short-termed observers on the June 23rd elections.
