“Cleaning country from waste materials”

Today’s Parliamentary session stared with a discussion of the first
decision proposed by the new government, the Waste Management Law amend,
which foresees stopping any kind of waste import for
recycling.

The Minister of Environment, Lefter Koka, declared that the goal of these amends is to clean the waste materials generated in our country through the recycling process.

“The quality of waste management in Albania is very low. Only cities have systems that gather solid wastes, but not local areas. Recycling is used in a very low level. The waste materials are usually eliminated in sites that don’t fulfill any criteria, which pollute the environment even more and put the citizens’ health in danger”, Koka declared.

The Environment Minister says that they will take all measures to divide wastes in their source as soon as possible.

But in the conditions of a fragmentary legislation, according to the Socialist Party Parliament Member, Besnik Bare, what would help the realization of this challenge is the creation of a National Cleaning Agency.

“The National Cleaning Agency could take the responsiblities to realize this challenge, as we declared in our relation together with colleague Shalsi. This is not a challenge to the recycling business. This challenge belongs to the Albanian Parliament, the central and local governments, the civil society, the media and each family”, Bare declared.

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama,  said that Albania is the most problematic country in Europe as regards the waste management, emphasizing that no waste material will be imported until we clean our country from our waste first.

“Albania is the most problematic country in Europe as regards the collection and treatment of waste materials. The best thing we could do for the ruined country that we inherited is stopping the import of any kind of waste material. Wastes in Albania will not enter until the day when we will be able to select, divide, collect and process our own wastes. We will take the waste materials away from the eyes of visitors and will invite them to come and taste our beauties, so that we can make our tourism industry even stronger”, Rama declared.

The draft-law for the Integrated Waste Management passed in Parliament only with the votes of the majority. This decision removes the option of a referendum that has been asked by the civil society, which opposed this decision of the former government to import foreign waste for processing.
