Citizens against import of waste materials

Hundreds of citizens and representatives of the civil society protested
in front of the Parliament against the draft law for the import of waste
materials, while the MPs were discussing the law in Parliament. The
representatives of the civil society also presented their arguments.

“Unofficial sources have notified us that the first load of waste materials has been prepared in Italy to enter Albania. Let us say ‘no’ to waste materials and the import of cancer”, declared the representative of the civil society, Kozara Kati.

Another citizen added:

“I come from Vicidol, the same village of Mr. Berisha. I have come here to stop the Parliament from approving this destructive law. I have come here to appeal Mrs. Topalli, who is the main activist in the war against cancer, to not accept the import of materials that would damage our health and would increase the cases of cancer”.

One of the leaders of this movement, Ardian Klosi, declared:

“When they protested against the demolition of the Pyramid, the government called us ‘Enver’s Pioneers’. But those pioneers gathered 5000 signatures in a single night. The pioneers made the President not sign the demolition.  This shows that there are citizens who know how to make their voice be heard. There is no other way besides raising our voice against the waste materials”.

The representatives of the civil society brought to attention the great number of people affected by cancer, an illness that is also caused by environmental factors.  Before this protest, the civil society undertook a campaign for gathering thousands of signatures against the import of waste materials.

Earlier the day, a group of environmentalists held a meeting with the President Bamir Topi, who asked the voice of civil society experts to be heard for a law that affects all citizens.

“The law must allow the procession of our waste materials only, because this country is not ready for foreign waste materials. The President must be the basic pillar of communication with the Prime Minister, the Minister and Commissions of National Safety”, declared Sasan Guri.

The experts underlined that the state must process the domestic waste materials, and not foreign substances.
