Chemical weapons to be destroyed at sea

The Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons confirmed that
Syria’s arsenal will be destroyed on the board of an United States ship,
the country that is contributing with the financing and technology.

“There will be two phases. All sealed chemical agents will arrive in Latikia from different areas, and then will be shipped by other member countries. In principle, it was decided that the ship will be American. It will not be done in Syria’s waters”, declared the head of the OPCW in Syria, Sigrid Kaag.

Although the name of the ship has not been published yet, it might be the M-V Cape-Ray, which has undergone modifications to support the neutralization operations that should end by December 31st.

According to analysts, the OPCW declaration is a strong indicator of dedication to destroy the arsenal within the deadline, by summer 2014. 35 companies have shown interest so far to destroy the chemical weapons of Syria.

According to BBC, many countries were against the operation, with Albania being one of them. They will use the hydrolysis method for eliminating them, which will create 7.7 million liters of remains, which, according to OPCW, will be put in 4000 containers. This is the least toxic load, but there are no volunteering countries to accept their elimination.
