“Albania is trying to access the European Union, and with the closing of
the election process this Wednesday in what has been called the first
clean elections in post-communist Albania, an important step was
undertaken in the hard path towards the European Union.
The let coalition led by former Mayor Edi Rama has own the elections. After the fear that the bloody rotation of power of the past would return, the question now is if these elections were clear, at least from the Balkan point of view, will Albania have a lighter path towards the European Union membership? This is one of the main promises made by the parties during the electoral campaign, and parties in Albania are not just a few”, says David A. Andelman from “World Policy Journal”.
If Albania achieves really enters the European block, it will be on top of the list for the most politically fragmented countries in our continent, according to Andelman.
Alderman tries to explain this political diversity with humor: “In three Albanians there are five different opinions. At least this is what has been insinuated by the European Union ambassador in Albania, Ettore Sequi, who says that there are still too many obstacles for receiving the candidate status. Turkey, a candidate since 1999, has not been able to enter the European Union yet. However, on July 1st Croatia will become a full member and this could irritate the Albanians. After all, they share the same coastline with the former Yugoslav republic which won its independence only seven months after their neighbor overthrew the communist dictatorship.
Probably what is keeping Albania outside the European Union is the long heritage of corruption. Andelman, who had been in Albania with his wife, describes an episode that he found surprising: a dark windowed Mercedes crossed a road in red lights and two traffic police officers just watched the scene and did nothing. And this wasn’t the first time. This, according to him, makes you feel the real Albania.
