Census, suspicious figures?

The Census results that showed a reduced population in Albania, were a surprise for the statistic experts themselves.

Milva Ikonomi, who led the Population Registration in 2001, says that based on the results of that year and the natural population growth in these years, the population number should have been bigger.

“We’re missing 14.2% of the population, from the recent census, or 470.000 individuals”, Konomi declared.

But where have these Albanians gone?

Instat said that the population reduction was due to the lower birth rates and increased emigration, but Mrs. Ikonomi says that there is another reason, which is related with the number of individuals who have refused to be registered and for whom INSTAT said that they are 29.000 persons.

“The practice followed by the interviewers was by asking one family member, and not every individual. The number of 29.300 people who refused to be registered, if multiplied with the average family member numbers, goes to 119.000 residents who have refused to participate”.

But the former director of INSTAT confirmed that the main reason is the emigration: “The population is reducing and the reasons are connected with the emigration. However, the result does not justify these figures”.

The Census results showed that the population has reduced with 7.7%, compared to 2001.
