The biggest party of the opposition has finally published why they
withdrew their candidate for the municipality of Kelcyra, Gentian
Mehmetaj. The reason is a suspicious past of the candidate, while his
lawyer presented his clean criminal records from Albania and Italy.
“Candidates will lose our support if their suspicious past is proven to be implicated in illegal acts”, declared Ivi Kaso, representative of the DP at the CEC.
“A person cannot be considered as someone with criminal records if there is official documents proving the contrary. I can give the original documents to CEC, to make it easier for them. No one should be discriminated as a person or even in front of the electorate”, decelared the lawyer of the former candidate, Gentian Mehmetaj.
The lawyer added that his client was already verified whe he was elected as Head of a commune in Permet. The three CEC members of the opposition declared they are ready to unregister him. But the CEC is clearly in a difficult position, due to the lack of legal documents by the DP for to prove their argument.
“We have public declarations and an official act. Should we decide based on the declarations, or on the official acts?”, asked the CEC Chairwoman, Lefteri Luzi.
“Parties should verify their candidates earlier and not put the CEC in this position”, declared the CEC member of the majority, Denar Biba.
The CEC will wait for verification from government institutions before they take any decision.
PJIU debates at CEC with coutner
“We’ll take this issue at the Electoral College
The PJIU representatives protested the CEC decision to exclude them from counting groups.
“You have used my words with your absurd logic. You can bring security to take me away from here, but this place was given to me by someone else and I guarantee the rights of the subjects I represent. I have respected the code of ethics more than you yesterday, Mrs.Chairwoman, since you removed constitutional rights from a political subject”, declared Gazmend Osmani, representative of the PJIU at CEC.
