Dropull Carnivals commemorate the pagan ritual of season changes,
rebirth of life and practical preparations for a new season of works.
Dozens of residents with masks brought comical characters on the square and used irony against several daily social behaviors and politics.
“I wish happy carnivals to everyone. We have always had this tradition. It was used by our grandfathers, and I am happy to see it even today. I cannot say what it is, but it is a celebration for everyone to get together and enjoy it”, a resident says.
“Many people have arrived this year from Greece to celebrate. These are occasions that make us get together and commemorate what we have inherited”, another one says.
The Dervician Carnivals are a huge event of this type that is organized in southern Albania. Besides the modern characters, it also brings typical traditional elements that have been inherited through centuries, such as the bells that scare winter away, tree branches and ritual costumes.
