In his first visit in Brussels, the Albanian President, Bujar
Nishani, met the EU President, Herman Van Rompuy, with who he discussed
Albania’s EU progress and the role of our country in the region.
“I reiterated my wish to see Albania progress in its EU path. It is important for the political reforms to continue. I encourage the government and opposition to make good use of this chance together, in order to achieve concrete results with the 12 key criteria”, declared Van Rompuy, who emphasized the most important points.
“The respecting of the rule of law, included in the war against corruption and organized crime is essential. I welcome the strong commitment of the President for the judiciary reform”, the EU President declared.
Van Rompuy reiterated that the European Integration must be a real national effort in a comprehensive project, and that it is essential for the success of our country to have a stable and constructive political debate. On his behalf, President Nishani reported about the political and economic situations, together with the reforms in the country.
“We are aware that we have achieved a lot, as we are aware of the challenges that remain ahead of us and the need to reinforce even further what we have achieved so far, and to work for higher standards. I guaranteed President Van Rompuy about my strong commitment as President of Albania, in order to do my best and to contribute for the reinforcement of the constructive spirit of cooperation”, Nishani declared.
The EU president declared that there is no doubt for the European future of the country, but the concrete progress depends from Albania and its performance. The Commission’ evaluation of the progress-report of October 10th will be discussed by the European Council member countries on December.
Barroso: Status is possible, finish the reforms
After the conference with Van Rompuy, President Nishani held a meeting with the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, from who received the same message.
Barroso declared that our country has good chances to receive the EU candidate status, but he underlined that it is up to Albania if they want to progress with the reforms.
“Albania has achieved progress in the road towards the EU, but they must continue the commitment for the remaining challenges. Everything is up to you, until the progress-report will be received”, Barroso declared.
On the other hand, Nishani made the usual promises of the Albanian politicians in Brussels about the war against crime and corruption.
“I updated Mr.Barroso about the achievements and reforms, especially with the Electoral Code and the concrete steps in the war against the organized crime and corruption. As president, I will give my best so that Albania can reach progress”, Nishani declared.
“I also guaranteed President Barroso that Albania will keep contributing for a good neighboring and peace in the region”, he added.
