Domestic violence and especially violence against women remains a
growing concern not only in the British society in general, but also
among the Albanian community which lives in Britain.
For this reason, one of the Albanian associations in Britain “Shpresa Program”, has undertaken the initiative for finding the best possible model that would offer the most specialized services for the Albanian community, after the murder of a woman in 2007, who participated in this program.
To address this problem, “Shpresa Program” made consultations with the supportive groups of Albanian women since 2008, and concludes that this is a massive problem, with a divided community, and which required a change of the mentality.
“Shpresa Program” had no specialized staff in this area. They collected funds and contracted specialized British institutions for this service.
According to this project inaugurated on November 2013, members of the Albanian community in Britain will have all the necessary information and training for creating a healthy family, and if this doesn’t happen, everyone should have the chance to request specialized help.
Domestic violence has increased recently, and one of the most common reason is the difference between generations, women with stronger positions and with more knowledge about the British society and the women rights in the British society.
Within six months, the project created by “Shpresa Program” has helped 19 women and their children to move from violence and find shelter in safe places, and also to give them all the necessary help. More than 100 women have participated in the six months training that aims increasing information regarding domestic violence, regarding the preventive measures or the services in their disposal.
Luljeta Nuzi, director of “Shpresa Program”, says for Top Channel that their belief is that everyone has the right to live safely and feel protected even when parents don’t get along. They have the chance to contribute in a healthy family and transmit the best values to their children.
New rules have entered in effect in Britain today, one of which allows police to check the records if partners have a domestic violence history.
The worst case of domestic violence in Britain was the murder of an Albanian woman in 2013, who was killed by her husband. Another murder has taken place in 2007 in Northern London.
There have been many cases when women have reported their husbands for violence. Police and the local Prosecution say that they are very strict in bringing to justice those who are responsible.
