Bridge built in Ali Pasha’s time, about to crumble

The Becishti Bridge, built in Ali Pasha’s time for connecting Tepelena
with at least seven villages, is at risk of being destroyed.

One of the bridge’s old legs has a visible crack, also caused by the recent floods in the Vjosa River. Local experts think that an intervention is emergent, because it puts in danger not only the monument, but also the citizens’ life.

The residents of Becishti and six other villages in Vjosa, have seen this as a dangerous challenge for years.

Only two years ago, children used to risk their lives on the side cables of the bridge on their way to school, because all holding wooden planks were rotten.

A group of Dutch volunteers helped to install newer planks, but the basement of one of the legs was cracked just a few months later.

The floods of this February have made the situation even more dangerous.
