Bregu on EU accession negotiations: “Internal situation in Germany, a problem for Albania”

This Monday, Majlinda Bregu, former Democratic Party Minister of European Integration and Government’s Spokesperson until 2013, met with the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn.

Commissioner Hahn is accompanying the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, in his Balkan tour.

“If you compare the first declaration of Juncker, in which he was completely cold regarding the process and his visit in Balkan, this time there is an essential difference”, Majlinda Bregu said.

There are hopes that the European Commission will open the accession negotiations with Albania, but Juncker didn’t make any promise in Tirana.

“I don’t think that the President can give such news before the Commission finalizes the report in April”, Bregu said.

Everyone is aware that even if the recommendation is positive this April, Germany is the one that needs to be convinced for the vote. And the vote of this June may be at risk due to the internal situation in Germany.

“Germany is still forming its government. It means that the German parliament will need two months to give its opinion. I hope that in June we will have a green light for the negotiations, maybe due to the stance of other countries, but no one can say with certainty if the decision will be taken in June or December”, said the former Minister of Integration, Majlinda Bregu.

According to Bregu, the reinforcing of the rule of law and zero conflicts with neighbours, are unchangeable obligations. Western Balkan is looking for partners, and they should not be problematic.
