‘Bread of the poor’ becomes more expensive as farmers raise the price of beans to 600 ALL/kg

Albanian consumers are paying 2 times more for their beans or as they are known the “poor people’s bread”.

In Korça this year, farmers again produced less beans, which has been associated with a significant increase in the selling price. In the market, a kilogram of Korca beans costs from 450 to 600 lek, a record that had never been reached before.

According to the farmers, this happened because they did not even get half of the anticipated produce as a result of the weather crisis, the hailstorms in the spring which damaged the plants in the hatching phase, and then again damaged by the extreme heat and drought.

Beans are one of the main foods for Albanians, but the increased price is worrying for them, so they are forced to consume less.

The region of the fields of Korça cultivates every year 2443 ha with beans which produce about 2700 tons per year, but the local production is now competing with that of the import with surprisingly cheap prices and no assurance of quality or production methods. Consumers now replace the local beans with those coming from Egypt costing about 200 Lek per kilogram or Turkish beans that are sold at 300 Lek per kilogram.
