The Socialist Party accused the Minister of Defense, Arben Imami, of
authorizing the purchase of weapons and equipments for the Military
Intelligence Service.
Brace explained when the military equipments were bought.
“Every interested Albanian remembers a declaration of Prime Minister Berisha right after January 21st, saying that ‘the only service that provided information for the possibility of the violent attacks against the government on January 21st, was the Military Intelligence Service’. This declaration explains why Berisha and Imami have signed the purchase of weapons for the MIS against its law, byt violating every legal procedure. They bought the equipments without a tender that could set a limit to the expense”, Brace declared.
Referring to the official documents, Brace shows the type of equipments that were bought by the Ministry of Defense for the use of MIS. According to Brace, there are procedural violations with the purchase.
“You can see the dates of the orders. Four months after the first order of Mr. Imamil, nothing was bought. Within one day, on January 19th 2011, two days before January 21st, the order is changed. They have authorized three companies to buy at any cost, two days before January 21st. The entire quantity was bought against the law. Arming the MIS with machine guns and snipers is against the law. The duty of MIS is to gather and analyze information, not to undertake military actions”, Brace declared.
According to Erjon Brace, these facts are the reason why Arben Imami has turned the Ministry of Defense into a bunker.
Minister of Defense reacts
After the accusations made by the Socialist MP, Erjon Brace, the Minister of Defense, Arben Imami, declared on a press release:
“The equipments were bought according to the legislation for the purchase of military equipments. The Ministry of Defense has started the procedure on January 19th, after the requests made by SHIU, but the purchase was realized much later”, Imami declared.
According to him, only those who organized the January 21st can answer for the date, but those are at the Socialist Party.
“The Socialist Party should not be afraid. It is ridiculous, because the Ministry of Defense is not that of Beqir Balluku that would have surrounded the Central Committee of the Socialist Party, from where Brace exploded today with his anger. The Socialist Party should be concerned for the seriousness and trust of having a well-equipped Military Intelligence Service.
