Bozdovec, the burned National Park

The National Park of Bozdovec is no more a good sight. The burned trees are the only thing that catches the eye.

The fires devoured 3/4th of the forest for 10 days, and few are the trees that can recover from this catastrophe. The green space has been completely transformed into grey.

But the damage is much bigger, because this forest was the lungs of Korce. The Bozdovec Park is only 8 km far from the city and was declared a National Park in 1968.

The century old pines blocked the sun with their branches and have supplied oxygen to the city for years. The massacre in this park started after 1990.

The trees were cut for heat and lumber. The forest also had a great number of wild animals that after the fire have disappeared.

More than 100 hectares were burned by the flames. More than 140 people tried to put it out, but only air interventions could do the work. No one is charged for what the police considered arson.

33 people were reported to the police during July for cutting trees in this forest, and all of them received minimal fines after which they returned to the forest with their saws. And the forest might have also been burned by someone who wanted to make a profit from the trees.
