Erseka local administration leaders, accompanied by the Czech
Ambassador, Bronislava Tomasova, the Socialist Parliament Member Arta
Dade and other officials paid homage in honor of the 107 martyrs killed
in the Borova massacre for the 70th anniversary of their death.

Relatives of the victims were present to pay homage to their loved ones. But different than many other ceremonies, to this joined the son of one of the German soldiers who apologized with the victims’ families.

On July 1943, the German army attacked partisans in the Barmash village and withdrew to Borova, where they slaughtered men, women and children of the village, marking this way one of the biggest massacres in the country. Markus Burger, son of soldier Anton Burger, brought the memory of this shocking event that he discovered from his father’s diary.

“70 years ago my father was in this place. He never told anything about Borova. He didn’t usually talk about this destructive war that brought so much pain, despair and hate in Europe. Only two years ago, one year after my father was dead, I was able to find his diary where he had written about Borova. I also found a book dedicated to the unit in which my father had served. I was so sad and I cannot describe my feelings from that day, especially today. All that I can do is share this memory with you and apologize for what my father did here”, Burger declared.

The Socialist Parliament Member, Arta Dade, declared that they will do maximal efforts so that Borova takes the Martyr Village status in a European level.
