A patrol of the Italian Carabinieri has arrested in Udine the
43-year-old Albanian, Cukal Delija, one of the owners of the boat that
sank on 9 January 2004 in the Otranto channel, causing 21 deaths.
The head of the Investigation Repart of the Udeine Provincial Command of Carabinieri confirmed for Top Channel that the arrest was made after a long investigations, surveillances and followings. He was found without documents and was living with some Albanian relatives in the area.
Cukal Delija is sentenced in Albania with 25 years to prison on international human traffic charges, as the responsible for one of the most tragic events of the Albanian emigration. On 11 November 2011 was arrested in Rome Altin Belulaj, sentenced with 20 years to prison for the same tragedy, while in 5 December 2007, in Prato, Tuscany, the police arrested another responsible, Nazmi Hykaj, sentenced in Albania with 25 years to prison.
