Black spots in the Tirana-Durres road

The road trip from Tirana to Durres starts by driving through one of the
“black spots” on the map, where accidents happen frequently, the “Ish
Doganat”, due to the lack of an overpass.

A few meters from there, there is another problematic spot for the police.

“We just left behind the Kamza overpass. We are in a place that is technically known as a black spot, due to the high number of accidents, and as a driver I put my seatbelt, which is the first rule for everyone in the car. This area doesn’t have enough signs”, says Altin Mema, Director of Lines at the Traffic Police.

What one notes in the highway entrance, is the lack of vertical effervescent signs.

“It’s a source of accidents because there’s a lack of pedestrian overpasses”, Mema declared.

The Qafe-Kashari entrance, besides the lack of signs, is also dangerous in time of rains. Puddles of water are created each time, increasing the chances of accidents.

“The road here collects water especially at the fast lane”, Mema declared.

Unidentified people have also removed the road signs near Gerdec, which is also seen as a dangerous area. The signs were initially misplaced or even missing in every pocket, and a bit further, no one has placed a sign at the Fllaka bridge.

“There is an entrance from a secondary road, but there are no signs, there is nothing that can orient drivers to move in the main road, and the second one is lacking of every standard”, Mema declared.

Besides the lacking signs and interrupted axis for secondary roads in residential areas, the return has also various black spots where fatal clashes occur.

But why do so many accidents happen in a 32 kilometer long area?

“The main cause is excessive speed, driving under influence, the lack of vertical and horisontal lines. In rainy days this segment collects water, which is one of the main risks”, Mema declared.

2013 has had 36 accidents and 11 dead in the Tirana-Durres highway, with 28 others injured and in bad conditions.
